Ancient Sport

Ancient Sport

Ancient Sport

If you didn't know already

Angling with the Fly

Being one more passion followed

When It's been months away

I've not been seen

Calls go unanswered

Bills unpaid

Off to the special places

Fresh water mornings with mountain scent

A Hunter with one intent

To hold the quarry under it's belly

Transfixed, transformed

Looking upon a canyons silver gray thread

Draped in sunsets rusty red

I have known this all life long

Branded to the heart

My father holding pride at bay

For eight year old's first cast

Journey of the rise, resistance, submission

Colors from the Almighty's palette

Infused on their flanks

Trails followed in these weathered river beds

Small bits of fur and feather

Thrown with plastic string

And a wooden stick

An offering, a trick

Seeing, differently

The workings, cycles of day, season

So I will be leaving soon

As Helios draws length and breadth

Another year begun

There will be a note on the table

Coffee in the mug

When you rise

I will look over my shoulder and smile

Load the rod

Start the journey over

Except, it has never ended, not really

"Come on down to the river of sight

And you can really understand"

Neil Young / Don't let it bring you down
