Duton Hill - The Essex Village

Essex in white
Misty countryside
Snowy sunset over Duton Hill
Cold but final resting place

What city do you live in? What neighborhood?

Duton Hill is our local village in the county of Essex in the South of England (Anglia), our postal town is Great Dunmow and five minutes up the road is the historical town of Thaxted.
On the map we come under Tilty Parish, but Duton Hill is on our postal address and has the village pub.
The village pub the 'Three Horseshoes' is run by Derek who is a very friendly and chatty landlord, this pub is a place where you will always be made welcomed.

What are some adjectives that describe your neighborhood?

Our village and the surrounding area would best be described as rural and very scenic. Stansted Airport is just 14 minutes by car but the aircraft don't really bother anyone. Other than the pub and Tilty Church, most people commute to there jobs and there is a large farming community all around us.

How long have you lived there, and what brought you there?

We moved in five years last November (2011). We moved here from Luton in Bedfordshire to be nearer to my old job at Stansted Airport (working for the Russians). We were at one point looking to immigrate to South Africa and decided that if we moved nearer to where I worked, we could save more money for the move to SA. In the end we feel in love with the area and the community.

What is your favorite thing about this place? Your least favorite?

As I type this I am looking out my office window at the beautiful Essex countryside which currently is covered in snow, but any time of year it is beautiful, peaceful and relaxing.
I guess it would be the lack of public transport and the only bus that goes through the village runs to a countryside schedule, not a city schedule.

Do you feel that you belong there?

Without any doubt, the contacts that we have made in the local area always makes you feel and know this is where we belong. People around this area will always talk to you, say "Good morning" and the village pub will always make you feel most welcome.

What is the most common misconception about where you live?

That we are totally remote and live in the middle of nowhere, this is a popular misconception we get from friend or family who live in towns or cities.

What is a special fact about your city that you have to live there to know?

This is a hard question to answer? I guess it would that Oliver Cromwell once stayed in Thaxted just five minutes up the road or that Dick Turpin the famous English highwayman once lived in Thaxted. The other more recent would be the cannabis drugs raid in Duton Hill!

What aspect of your city do you secretly love?

The warm 'real ale' English beer in the pub (don't get me wrong I do like cold larger beer to) and the quiet, peaceful life.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Like most rural communities we have many things going on throughout the year. We have the local market in Thaxted, the Fireworks and Mayday Fun Day at the village pub (plus many other celebrations through the year) and the Countess of Warwick Country Show - did I mention the beer festivals!!!
