What city do you live in? What neighborhood?

I live in Irvine, California. This place is very much "sanitized" by definition, no dirt is allowed. Everything is preplanned and must always look that way.

So, when you see something that looks old, worn or dirty, it is a bit of a find. These photos depict something that is contrary to the sameness, the sterilized, sanitized and beige-tinted look of nearly everything here.

What are some adjectives that describe your neighborhood?

Beige. Lots of beige. All same looking...miles and miles of sameness. Very safe, lots of control, plenty of police to keep people from straying in that don't live in a beige box here in Irvine.

How long have you lived there, and what brought you there?

Been here over 10 years...came to work with a company in Irvine.

What is your favorite thing about this place? Your least favorite?

It is safe; my things aren't stolen on a daily basis like other places in OC or LA county I've lived.

The least favorite thing is the control, the sameness...everything looks the same no matter where you are...you know you are in Beigetown.

Do you feel that you belong there?

As well as anyone does; technically the city would be better off without people but we still persevere.

What is the most common misconception about where you live?

That rich people live here. I am not and I live here...but just barely can afford it.

What is a special fact about your city that you have to live there to know?

That people are so sheltered here that they make up their own "troubles" so that they can relate to the people they see on TV in other places.

What aspect of your city do you secretly love?

That there is plenty of beige paint to be had at Ace and Home Depot.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Nope...pretty much covers it...now I know not to pick a topic with twelve fields

I used to live nr Irvine 20 years ago; it was beige & planned then! Funny article, I enjoyed it.

Enjoy your work as always .
This piece made me think of the old Monkees song "Pleasent Valley Sunday"
