Photo Essay

To a Water Lily

Serenity

On calm summer days, its hard to resist photographing water lilies, especially when a perfectly symmetrical reflection creates double the pleasure. But... I do not want to keep getting photos that all look the same, another pretty water lily with its perfect reflection. So, my creative efforts are challenged to capture the next water lily photo and feature something unique, to make it distinct from the hundreds of other water lily photos I've taken. Early morning offers mist rising from the water, twinkly sparkles and shadows of the stamens imprinting themselves on fragile petals. Water droplets add interest. Sometimes an insect presents itself for a diversion. Reflections of other nearby objects and even feather and bubbles have helped me compose something slightly different from what I've captured previously. There will come a day in late September when the last water lily cedes its glory to autumn's colorful foliage. Then the challenge is to find a way to catch the fall colors in a unique way!
