Escape to the Beach
21 Jun 2013
The crashing waves, the cry of the gulls, the echoes of voices carried through the salty air, the feel of the warm summer sun on your skin, your hair blowing in the ocean breeze, burying your toes in the cool sand, the fresh smell of the sea air mingled with the tropical scent of various sunscreen lotions. These are the sights, sounds and smells of the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
I've been going to the Outer Banks since I was a child. For several summers and holiday weekends, my grandmother would rent a cottage and the whole family would go down to the beach; uncles, aunts, cousins. Those are the memories that I cherish and keep me coming back time and again to a place that washes away my stress and worries, leaving me with a feeling of complete relaxation.
Today, I continue to travel to the Outer Banks and no time of the year is off limits. I find the beach appealing any time: in the spring, when the wind is still a bit chilly and the water is bracing. I relish the summer months, when all is right. The fall is beautiful at the beach and things have quieted down. Children are back in school and the locals take back the beach. It's a relaxing time. I just throw a blanket over my legs while I sit at the beach. Winter is magical, with the crisp cool air.
And let's not forget the magical nights. Ahhh....on my back in the sand watching the stars and listening to the waves. Rising up to look out to sea and dream. There is pure magic in the air and I get the feeling I can do anything. I cast my wishes and dreams out into the ocean air and watch them rise above to the stars or go out to sea, like a message to the elements.
My favorite moments in life are spent on or near the beach. There's just something magical about it. My favorite sound is the sound of the waves crashing. My favorite smell is the beach air. My favorite feeling is that of the sand between my toes.
My favorite place to photograph is the beach. There are so many wonderful sights to behold and capture. This is a sampling of some of my favorites. So, grab a beach chair, slather on some sunscreen, dig your feet in the sand and take a relaxing moment to enjoy the trip to the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
