The Barrage of Hops and Barley

Barrage of Hops and Barley

It all started with a small gathering table and two stools. They fit perfectly in the breakfast nook of our townhouse in Alexandria Virginia. Once we moved to Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, we bought a house without a breakfast nook. My wife Candace off-handedly remarked I should put it in the corner of our garage and make a little bar area. I did just that and proceeded to fill that corner with whatever beer paraphernalia (commonly called breweriana by other obsessed collectors like myself) I had. I then bought a "kegerator" with two taps. Of course the gleaming black surface begged me to cover it in beer and brewery stickers which I gathered everywhere I could. Now we have two kegerators holding a total of five kegs (three commercial beer taps and two we home brew ourselves.) We also have moved pieces of furniture out to the garage for storage, to hide the "garage" stuff and to hold more stickers, hundreds of bottle caps, about 40 beer books and magazines, a television hooked up to satellite, and various other beer bottles and knickknacks. On the walls there are about 85 matchbooks, 46 framed signs and posters, 35 unframed (tin, wood, etc.) signs, 16 flags/pennants, 14 trays, seven lighted signs and of course a dartboard! So since moving here three years ago we have started brewing beer, adopted two dogs, one named Hops and the other Barley, and turned our garage into a full blown taproom! We've always liked beer but now some might call us obsessed. When Candace suggested we turn a little corner of our garage into a bar, neither one of us could've imagined what it would become, but we also couldn't be happier. Hard to believe it all started with a small gathering table and two chairs, and even harder to believe I haven't covered them in stickers or bottle caps!
