iPhone Project: The Manhattan Beach Surfers

Is a professional-style of photography plausible with an overrated smartphone? Without the use of Applications (which some consider cheating, I have no thought in the matter!), can the small 5 Megapixel camera make stop-motion possible?
Took the opportunity to create a motion capture study of surfers off the Manhattan Beach Pier with my trusty iPhone 4 and the results were pretty impressive. The Pier may have offered a good viewpoint of awaiting fish on sticks and interesting observation into the culture of surfers in social behavior, hierarchy interactions and sportsmanship.
EDIT: Minor adjustments with contrast, Color conversion to Black & White.
