Photo Essay

This is Thirteen

Thirteen:4

It's hard being a girl these days. The peer pressure, the role models (or lack thereof), the struggle to be creative and yet fit in, the desire to be independent from parents one day and then wanting to be with them the next.

On her birthday, I just wanted to take her picture - to capture her on her first day of thirteen. But she HATES having her picture taken. And she really tries hard to never smile and never appear happy.

So this group of photos were my attempts to get one good capture against her wishes. She tries to move away from the camera at the last minute to ruin my first try, she complains that the sun is in her eyes and she can't see, she gets mad that I ask her to smile and stops engaging completely, and then the ice is broken when I talk about boys.
