Turbulent

Turbulent 1

The recent devastation brought on by cyclones, typhoons and hurricanes, where flooding has washed away entire towns and villages, has caused me to give new reverence to the liquid of life.

I have taken advantage, and often abused, the privileges of living in a society where clean water comes to my home. Also, living in the Midwest, the most I have to fear of damaging water is the occasional soggy basement.

In the weeks following Cyclone Nargis, which pounded Myanmar (Burma) on May 3, I collected these photos. They are from various creeks around town. As dark, brooding and volatile as these images seem, they are literally the sound of a babbling brook. In most instances the water is mere inches deep. The potential for ruin, however, runs much deeper.
