Sandscapes - A Desert Odyssey

Area 51

There is a beautiful place hidden just inland from the central Western Australian coast that hosts an annual camping visit for some friends and me.

We pitch our tents in the middle of no-mans land between the Indian Ocean, the Pinnicles Desert, a large navy bombing range and a strange little squatter's holiday township called Wedge Island. This isn't your typical holiday destination.

There are no roads in or out; just kilometers of dunes followed by an intricate maze of rough tracks through the harsh scrub and a long beach that requires about an hour and a half to get to the closest paved road. Getting there and back is half the fun.

We've nicknamed the place "Area 51". In the six or seven years we've been going there, we've never seen another person or vehicle on these dunes.

When we set up camp we have the world to ourselves for as far as the eye can see. It feels like being on a different planet, and that's exactly the way we like it.

These images are really spectacular!! The colors combined with the dramatic lighting truly make some of them look like they were shot on another planet. I hope this gets printed so I can see them really big!
