Kansas Skies.......they are my obsession.

Whether it's the blazing blue of summer, the gray of an endless winter, or it's angry with the black, dripping clouds of a storm, Kansas skies are never boring.
I think I got it from my grandpa. He owned the local newspaper for years, he loves taking pictures and he loves keeping track of the weather. My favorite folder on my laptop is jam-packed with weather links and my storm alert in my bedroom is always turned up to the highest volume just waiting for the latest update.
I can't imagine living in a place where there aren't four seasons. In Kansas, there is a definite Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. The blinding snow of a blizzard sweeping across the Plains is something one never forgets. The flakes feel like seeds that are pitting your face. For me, if it's going to snow, I want two feet of the white stuff. I love slogging around in it snapping red birds or winter berries or bales of hay. But, it's the Spring and Summer storms that really get me excited. There is nothing like seeing a near by storm on the radar, grabbing my camera, jumping in the truck and chasing down a tornado. Am I a professional storm chaser? Nope. Am I crazy? Probably. But, I can't help it. It's an addiction. Because, once you capture an awesome cloud, or you happen to be one of the lucky few that get that blinding lightning strike, or you're one of the REALLY lucky ducks that get a tornado on film, you will crave the next capture worse than that first cup of coffee in the morning.
Does anyone know of a twelve step program for weather obsessed people? If so, I'm a prime candidate.

wonderful, wonderful story with incredible shots! Part of my family lives in Kansas and what you are saying is totally true! Whenever I got there, looking up is always amusing to see what crazy thing the sky is doing next

Not every photographer sees a rare opportunity to capture unspoiled beauty with a camera. Melissa has that talent.
Her work deserves publication! -
