I never understood completely why people commit suicide and I don't think that society in general is fully aware of this issue and its amplitude.
I was shocked to find out that nearly one million people worldwide die by suicide each year, making it one of the world's leading causes of death (that is more than the number of people murdered or killed in a war).
Textbook motives include depression, shame, pain, financial problems or other negative circumstances. However, there are views suggesting that suicide is a cry for help, or it may express despair and a wish to escape, rather than a genuine intent to die. Statistics show that most people who attempt suicide do not succeed the first time they attempt it (there are an estimated 10 to 20 million non-fatal attempted suicides every year); nevertheless the risk of succeeding grows with each new repetition. I think this is something to think about...
