William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two young lovers from Verona whose family circumstances result in their untimely deaths. Although Juliet is a fictional character, tourists flock to the balcony from which it is said she addressed her lover Romeo. The balcony sits in an interior courtyard with a small passageway from the street. For years, people have posted love messages in this passageway directly on the walls and on small pieces of paper. The result is a multicolored outpouring of emotion that is fascinating to read.
