Where I'm At

A gem of the Far North, New Zealand

What city do you live in? What neighborhood?

Pukenui, more of a small village than a city.

What are some adjectives that describe your neighborhood?

Rural with a growing tourist industry. Farmers and fishermen make up the bulk of the working class. There are also a lot of 'country squires' with hobby orchards. Avocadoes are the primary crop. Scenic, quiet, and often windy in the extreme.

How long have you lived there, and what brought you there?

About 3 years now, including a scouting trip in 1996. I came here for the scenary & access to the water, and to get as far as I could from Auckland on the North Island.

What is your favorite thing about this place? Your least favorite?

The sunrises I can see over the harbour from my beach house. The small town mentality.

Do you feel that you belong there?

As much as anywhere I've lived, yes.

What is the most common misconception about where you live?

That there's a night life.

What is a special fact about your city that you have to live there to know?

The nearest ATM is 55 Km south. Just kidding....people can be very inquisitive, but reticent when asked about themselves. They love tourists, as long as they eventually go home, preferably broke. Immigrants are suspect, asians and poor Yanks being their least favorites.

What aspect of your city do you secretly love?

It wouldn't be a secret if I told, would it? Seriously, I guess the way eccentrics like myself are tolerated, in the POME tradition.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Dress for 3 seasons, year round, including rain gear.
