Ephesus- The Ancient Greek City

Temple of Hadrian

Walking through the streets of Ephesus, the 46 degree (celsius) heat beating down on the tourists roaming the sites, I was trying to keep up with the tour guide who would hurry along to take shelter under the next olive tree. Not all Turks are used to the hot weather.

Ephesus once was a major Greek City, and served as a trading port, as well it was famous for the Celsus Library and the Medical school.

Although the city was originally built on a riverbank, its location shifted several times due to earthquakes (common in Turkey) and floods.

The Celsus library was one of the largest in that time, and it was estimated to hold a 12000 Scrolls. The modern Library, for example, the New York City Public Library holds more than 50 million items.

The city of Ephesus has recently began to be be discovered by archeologists and historians. Ephesus is considered one of the best preserved ancient cities.

Walking through the streets of Ephesus, I was really taken back through time, and I could really picture the Gladiators getting ready for a show, as I was sitting on the theater steps, or I could picture gatherings in front of the Celsus Library. Life back then seemed simple in comparison with today's modern metropolis. Back then, this city was considered the largest city of the Roman empire.
