What city do you live in? What neighborhood?
A tiny little outport community on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland and Labrador. Travel to the very end of the long and winding Bay D'Espoir highway and you'll find us nestled between the highlands and the sea.
What are some adjectives that describe your neighborhood?
Scenic, rural, coastal, traditional, welcoming... home!
How long have you lived there, and what brought you there?
We moved here abruptly in September when my partner Jason got a job offer in a nearby town. We needed a place to live... fast! Luckily after sifting through limited contacts we came across Joseph Cox... a man we're now proud to call friend... who offered to open up his late mothers house for us to rent. Cheers to Joe!!
What is your favorite thing about this place? Your least favorite?
Moving to a new place far from friends and family is always easier when you have good neighbours to help you through. Thanks again Joe!
Living the coastal life is definately for me. The endless rocky cliffs peppered with seagulls, split by the sun and fierce winds, crashed by the unforgiving Atlantic waves... just beautiful. The people here worship the ocean as their provider and at the same time despise it for its wrath. It is for this reason that anyone who has ever lived on the coast of Newfoundland hold the sea in the highest of respect.
Do you feel that you belong there?
We're settling in nicely!
What is the most common misconception about where you live?
That we're extremely isolated... it's merely a state of mind. Yes we're void of stores and shopping malls... but we have an abundance of adventurous spirit... and a camera to boot! We're adaptable creatures who believe that home is where you hang your hat.
What is a special fact about your city that you have to live there to know?
The community has a yearly beach clean up. Any junk or debris washed up by the tide is reclaimed or disgarded. The town is very proud of it's tidiness!
What aspect of your city do you secretly love?
The little old men who crowd the slipway everyday... they are courteous and kind-hearted... real gentlemen and full of wonderful stories.
Anything else you'd like to add?
If you're ever vacationing in this great province of ours, don't just wonder whats down that long, desolate highway as you pass by... follow it and find out!
