The Other Alaska

Whale Play, Sitka

It struck me that with all the furor over the VP candidate for the Republican Party, it's easy to forget the natural beauty and priceless wonders represented by the non-voting citizens of Alaska. I had the great pleasure to visit the State for the first time in August. It was supposed to be a salmon fishing trip, but for reasons that ranged from global warming to overfishing, the salmon were not biting. This turned out to be a blessing because on one day in particular, we decided to forgo the lousy fishing when we saw a spout in a sheltered bay. Turned out to be a mother humpback and her extremely playful calf. Not only were we treated to some really cool "tail" opportunities, we passed a number of sea lion vacation spots that screamed for a camera. The day that seemed to be going nowhere, ended up being wildlife heaven and one I'll not soon forget.
