The Gitzo tripod and BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp is one of the best thing that I have ever bought for improving my photography.
When I first started taking pictures and reading a multitude of photography blogs everyone said if you want to take better pictures get a good tripod and learn how to use it.
What makes one tripod good and another bad? Good tripods are light enough to carry long distances yet heavy enough not to tip over every time the wind blows. Good tripods do not have a center column they have a large plate where all three legs join, and the camera or the ballhead sits at the top. My favorite tripod company is Gitzo. Why Gitzo? The Gitzo tripod I bought is light yet strong, easy to use, can be made to stand very tall or very low to the ground is easy to carry and above all it holds my BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp perfectly.
Now you are asking what is a BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp? The BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp is the omni directional device that holds the camera rock solid still when it is on the tripod. As you may have guessed by now the ballhead goes on top of the tripod then the camera goes onto the ballhead. This arrangement significantly reduces the amount of vibration to the camera especially if you use the remote cord or trigger release so when you actually take the picture your hands will not be on the camera. The BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp is a wonder of engineering. Made of both stainless steel and aircraft grade aluminum it allows you to angle the camera anyway you want lock it in place without any fear of the camera slowly creeping to a new position. I have put my camera on in the morning and come back in the afternoon to find it exactly as I left it. This is a great product. The BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp weighs only two pounds but will hold fifty pounds so if you move up to a large format camera this ballhead should work just fine.
Now if you are wondering where did I learn all this and where did I purchase my BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp. Well the answer is www.reallyrightstuff.com.
This is without a doubt one of the best photography equipment websites that I have ever come across. The site is well designed, easy to use, easy to find things on and every product they sell is outstanding in terms of quality, reliability, and durability. I purchased my BH-55 ballhead with PCL-1 clamp. Several years ago and it still looks and works like the first day it arrived. Additionally, the entire catalog is downloadable as a PDF document and it not only contains all of the products they sell but lots of good usable information on what a ballhead is and what it can do for you, how to take panoramic pictures, what is an L-plate and why do you need one, quick release clamps, flash brackets, Len's collars, and more and more and more. The catalog alone is worth a trip to the web site. So take this little bit of free advice and check out www.reallyrightstuff.com. You might just find what you are looking for.
