The Reluctant Star

Girl in Purple Cloak

Say hello to Emily, but say it quietly, she doesnt like to be noticed, or have me brag about her. Its hard not to brag, she is a perfect A student in school. She excels in every athletic endeavor that she joins, and she joins a lot. When she was 6 and 7 she won the Ohio State Taekwondo championships two years running and place third in the nation at 7.

She is 13 now, but has played baseball on a boys team as a pitcher since she was 5. She has played football (with the boys) since first grade. In the spring she is on the track team where she throws shot put and runs in the 4 x 100 meter run.

Her best and favorite sport is basketball, while her 5' 1" frame is not the largest on the court, her skill and hard work make up for it. She just made the 7th grade team at her school and was invited to join an off season league by another coach. She takes this all in stride and never boasts or brags, in fact she doesn't like me bragging - so I hope she doesn't find this story, but what is a parent to do - you have to be proud. I don't push her into being an athlete or a great student, its just who she is. Maybe because she is the youngest of my kids, I'm not sure. But life wouldnt be as glorious without Em around, she is a joy to watch.

Her dream is to play college basketball for a big 10 school, and I have no doubt she will make it, so watch out for a blue eyed, blond haired girl from Ohio, with a lot of determination in a few years on the court, it will probably be Emily. Just pretend not to notice her, she just wants to play the game.
