A Gentle Guide to Staying Near Baie de Beauport
Where I'd bring my partner near Baie de Beauport, Quebec City: a Hilton, a resort and two island stays, plus falls, old stone and winter ice.
There's a version of Quebec City that starts where the St. Lawrence meets the Beauport shore, and I fell for it slowly.
I spent years at a hotel desk watching people pick rooms by a map pin, and these are the rooms I'd pick for two, with the falls, the old stone and the winter ice around them.
The materials this district is made of
I think of Beauport as the water side: Baie de Beauport and Montmorency Falls share the same borough, east of downtown.
Montmorency Falls Park - 83 m of falling water, open all year except 25 December, and so worth a half-day!
The cable car and suspension bridge - the cable car even runs in winter, which I adore.
The winter ice cone - spray builds it at the foot of the falls, my pick for couples who don't mind the cold.
Old Québec, about 12 km west, answers with stone, glass and paint. If you'd rather compare, browse all Quebec City hotels & apartments.
A room close to the best wall
The best wall in town is free: 4.6 km of fortifications ring the Upper Town, open all year.
The walls - my favourite first walk, with no ticket and no queue!
The Citadelle - a star-shaped stone fortress on Cap Diamant, guided tours only, with a cannon fired at noon every day.
Stay inside the walls and you trade the bay's quiet for cobbles on your doorstep. The falls are about 12 km east, a drive away.
One thing from my desk years: after midnight, guests asked about the pool more than anything, so confirm the rooftop hours when you book.

8.8Hilton Quebec - across the street from the walls, a five-minute walk in, with a rooftop pool open all year; swimming under snowflakes is my kind of date night (where to stay in Old Québec).
The surface that owns the morning
Mornings belong to the free things, and Old Québec has plenty.
Terrasse Dufferin - the clifftop boardwalk by the Château, free all year and my coffee-in-hand favourite.
La Maison Smith on Place Royale - coffee and pastries from 7 a.m., so worth the early start!
Basilica-Cathedral Notre-Dame de Québec - a free church that opens early on weekdays.
The funicular - $7 a ride, cash only, so visit an ATM first; the Breakneck Stairs are the free way down.
Weather as a developing agent
Snow runs from November to April here, and November is the greyest month.
Carnaval de Québec - 5-14 February 2027, with the night parades and the ice canoe race on the St. Lawrence both free!
Hôtel de Glace - opens 26 December 2026, weather permitting, a short drive north at Valcartier.
The Plains of Abraham in winter - skating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, with rentals at the Skaters' Chalet.
Parks Canada's Saint-Louis Forts close from late October until mid-May. Driving? Winter tyres are mandatory on Quebec-registered cars, rentals included, from 1 December to 15 March.
If you'd rather drive in from the north, here's the room I'd choose.

8.5Doubletree By Hilton Quebec Resort - in Charlesbourg, a short drive from downtown, with a year-round hot tub and sauna waiting after a snowy day, free parking and terrace views of the golf course (the resort ->).
Glass and paint
Glass and paint live at the art museum on Grande Allée.
Espace Riopelle - the new pavilion opened on 21 October 2026, and the Riopelle retrospective inside is a must!
Tribute to Rosa Luxemburg - Riopelle's monumental work, over 40 m long, shown in a nearly 360° display on the third floor.
The museum restaurant - glass walls and 70 seats looking over the Plains.
Hyperrealism: This Is Not a Body - hyperrealist sculptures, on until 20 December 2026.
The Gérard-Morisset pavilion is closed until spring 2027, and the museum is closed on Mondays.
The surface that owns the evening
Evenings here belong to the stage and the river.
Félix, je me souviens - 4 November 2026 at Théâtre Capitole, a tribute of music, circus and theatre with 19 artists, so tender!
Pink Martini - 18 March 2027 at Capitole, big-band glamour that suits two.
Hans Zimmer Live - 28 February 2027 at Centre Vidéotron, film scores at full scale.
Igloofest - 4-6 March 2027 at Place Jean-Béliveau, for ages 16 and over and billed as the coldest festival in the world.
The Québec-Lévis ferry - 12 minutes each way, with the last boat leaving Québec at 2:20 a.m.
Over the bridge to the island
Just east of the falls, the bridge to Île d'Orléans opens onto farms, orchards and slow roads.
The Chemin Royal - a 67 km road around the island through six villages, and my favourite lazy drive!
Microbrasserie de l'Île d'Orléans - island-brewed beer at Pub Le Mitan in Sainte-Famille.
Le Moulin de Saint-Laurent - lunch or dinner in a historic mill.
There's no regular city bus, so come by car, bike or tour. The old 1935 bridge stays in use while the new one is delayed. Sleeping on the island trades the walls for quiet; please confirm breakfast and dinner arrangements when you book.

The texture shot list
My little list of subjects worth stopping for.
Porte Saint-Jean - a stone gate in the walls, lovely with a morning coffee.
Place Royale - where Champlain's Québec began in 1608.
Notre-Dame-des-Victoires - a stone church completed in 1723.
Rue du Petit-Champlain - a narrow pedestrian street of boutiques and bistros.
The falls' ice cone - winter only, so bring layers!
Go and find your own favourites
If I could book only one, I'd choose the Hilton for a first trip and the island for the second.
Wander, get a little lost and keep what you love. You can also browse Quebec hotels & apartments to compare.
Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
