My Favourite Business Hotels Near Cliff Bungalow-Mission
A night auditor's soft-spot list of business hotels - glass towers, cozy inns and airport suites - near Calgary's Cliff Bungalow-Mission.
I always liked working nights in hotels that sat at the edge of a busy downtown - you get to watch a city's skin change colour as the sky does. Cliff Bungalow-Mission has that same quiet charm on the edge of Calgary's business core, and picking a hotel to work from here has always felt, to me, less like logistics and more like choosing which wall of light you want to wake up to. This is my short list, gathered the way I gather all my little black books - through curiosity, and a soft spot for a good front desk.
The materials this district is made of
Downtown Calgary is a study in glass and steel towers built up fast around older brick and sandstone low-rises, the kind of contrast you notice most on a grey prairie afternoon. Business hotels here tend to pick a side - new glass tower or older, practical block - and that choice says a lot about the stay you'll get. I've audited both kinds of buildings at 3am, and they run very differently. The surface that owns the morning
Glass towers catch the first light best, and in this business-hotel strip that means The Dorian, Autograph Collection - glass-clad and modern, the sort of downtown hotel built for city-facing rooms and a proper work desk. It sits right in Calgary's city centre with a fitness centre, two restaurants and a bar on-site, useful if you land late and don't want to go looking for dinner. Ask the front desk about breakfast timing before a tight morning meeting - it's rated well, but hours are always worth confirming.-

The surface that owns the evening
Older low-rise blocks wear the evening better, in my experience - less glare, more warmth. Best Western Plus Calgary Centre Inn (see rates and rooms) sits five minutes from the city centre and under three kilometres from Calgary Tower, with an indoor pool and hot tub that matter more than they sound once it cools outside. It's the kind of property that trades a bit of polish for a lower rate and a 24-hour front desk, exactly the trade I'd make on a work trip.-

Weather as a developing agent
Calgary's weather changes its mind fast, and a hotel with a kitchen and a free airport shuttle earns its keep on those days. Staybridge Suites - Calgary Airport by IHG gives you kitchen facilities, an indoor pool and a free shuttle four kilometres from the airport ->. I'd choose it for a stay longer than three nights, when cooking your own breakfast beats another buffet.-
