Congratulations to Linda Heath for her winning entry in the Plain and Simple photo contest! Linda’s photo was taken inside the abandoned Lonaconing Silk Mill factory, located in Lanaconing, Maryland. The silk factory, also known as the Klotz Throwing Company, was the last intact silk mill in the United States. The silk factory ceased operations in July 1957 after the staff walked out on strike. In 2007 the mill was nominated for the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

“I found the old pair of shoes in a cubby upstairs and carried them around to see where I could find a good photo with them. That ray of light and the colors of the peeling walls was the best. I like geometric lines in photography, so I shot a few from different locations. This one hit just right.”Photos taken with Canon 7d with a 18-55 2.8 Canon lens. No flash, no tripod.
