    Thank you, Nancy! The one in front is indeed the male -- they can afford to be flashy, because if they get eaten the female can still tend to the young.
    The male buffleheads have flashy, iridescent colours and purple feet, so they are amusing to see out of the water. I've never seen a female out of the water, so I don't know if they have purple feet as well.
