'Kumkum' is a powder made from turmeric or saffron. It is used for social and religious markings in Hinduism. The turmeric is dried and powdered with a bit of slaked lime, which turns the rich yellow powder into a red color. This shot was taken at the city market of Bangalore which sells 'Kumkum' in large quantities. A dot is placed on the forehead when one visits temple or in other religious/social activities known as 'Tilak' using this powder. Kumkum is a significant visual metaphor which marks the vibrant culture and tradition of Hinduism
