My first car was a silver 1987 Nissan Sentra. My Dad paid $100 bucks for it and it had a cracked heater core. I had to put coolant in it every 30 minutes or so and it felt more like a golf cart than a car. There are a lot of great stories revolving around that car but in the two weeks that it ran, I learned how to drive. Every vehicle I have owned since has been American made. Call me old-school, but I just prefer the styling of American vehicles. That said, in my two Saturdays at the Detroit auto show this year, I spent most of my time photographing the vehicles stamped “Made in the USA.” I fell in love with the new Chevy Camaro when it was first revealed as a concept car several years back. Lately, I’ve also been eying up the Dodge Challenger. When I stumbled across this purple one, I must have shot it from 30 different angles with 3 different lenses. I admire the intricacies of American styling but this photo represents the warped ideals of the auto manufacturers who continue to market inefficient vehicles with high sticker prices. With the auto industry barely hanging on, I wonder if they are counting on the average consumer to overlook these shortcomings for the sake of a “cool” design. These re-imagined classics certainly capture our attention, but many consumers are more concerned with value over style.
