The Interurban Bridge, also called the Ohio Electric Railroad Bridge, was built in 1907 in Waterville, OH. At that time it was the longest reinforced concrete bridge ever built. The Roche de Boeuf (also called Roche de Bout) rock outcropping near the center of this photo was used to help support the bridge throughout its construction. The rock formation is also of historical significance as it was a gathering place for many of the area’s Native American tribes. In August of 1794, nearly 1000 Native Americans met at the rock to prepare for a battle against the United States military led by General Anthony Wayne who was handpicked by George Washington. The Battle of Fallen Timbers ensued soon after just north of this location. A tornado had recently ravaged the area and tore down many of the trees, hence the name “Fallen Timbers.”

A friend of mine often frequents this location and has coined it his own personal “Fortress of Solitude.” On a lazy Sunday in October of 2009, we stopped to admire the view and shoot a few photos. While this location is rich with history, it has a deeper meaning for me. It reminds me that nothing is built to last and everything is subject to time. Things change, and try as we might, we can’t stop them. Just as this ancient rock formation was used to support the bridge, the intertwining connection of moments in each of our lives are what supports who we are and the connections we’ve made.
