Back home, a friend recently arrived with a bang at my door. She'd come with no cash money, only a bank-card. I never thought, she said.

Where do you stay? How do you eat and drink? In a city closed. I shopped at a grocery-store outside of town. I ate like a camper. Cheese torn from a wheel. Bread torn from a loaf that grew harder every day, cut skin by the end of the week. Drank fine Abruzzo wines from bottles only because I'd begged a cork screw from another visitor. Opened all of my bottles while I had this chance. After a few days, the body of the wine - stiffened on fresh air - could be conjured like a genie. No cork-screw for the bank. Nowhere to spend the cash that Roman machine tellers had tended as if catering to my every need.
