I'm standing inside what I think is a grain silo on a farm that has not been used for many years. a tree is growing inside it, and the setting sun is just catching the inside rim at the top,

I'm not sure why there's a long rectangular slit from the bottom to the top. Anybody have any ideas?

Fabulous!! I'm no expert but I would hazard a guess that it's for air circulation, so whatever is stored inside doesn't mildew and/or become compost. Just a guess.

    Fantastic composition!

I grew up on a farm, and our bins had openings at the bottom for air vents, as Denise said, but also for ogres so that you could get the grain back out of the bin.

Thanks for the explanation Denise and Jeff !
I really appreciate it,because I had no idea why it was designed that way.
