We have this plant growing wild in back of our house. I have read that it is best to avoid the elderberries species like this with red fruit growing in rounded instead of flat clusters as they may make you sick. They are a very colorful plant regardless, even if they are not good to eat.

    Thank you for your comments...Judy, I have never seen the birds eat this particular species of elderberries and maybe they are aware it is not edible....Perhaps they eat the flat clusters which are fit for consumption.
