The baby kitties are three weeks old today and boy are they getting around. They are trying to play with each other and to escape their basket. The black one is the tiniest but the boldest and bravest. The one closest too the camera is Donald's. He is going to be a mighty mouse hunter. LOL.

I have enjoyed shooting these little ones. Anytime you are shooting a black subject versus white ones is a challenge. Your camera does not know how to expose such contrast correctly. That is why you see so many over exposed wedding dresses or no detail in a grooms suit in many wedding pictures. I get frustrated when someone approaches me and ask me to fix the images that another photographer took at their wedding. The answer is probably not and if I did, it would cost you more than if you had hired me in the first place. LOL.

So how did I pull off this exposure? I rarely shoot in auto. You can't get the control you need in auto. I shoot full manual with manual focus as well. Auto focus does not work well with moving targets. I simply used the natural light from the door and window and bounced my off camera flash off of the ceiling. My aperture was set at f5.6 to blur the background and catch as much natural light as possible. My shutter was set for 250 because that is the sync speed with my camera and flash unit. You contol the light with the aperture when using flash. My ISO was set at 400 because I needed to capture as much natural light as possible and still be able to blow the image up to 16x20 with as little noise as possible. I bounced the light to get enough shadow to create form and texture without the harshness and flat light that straight on flash creates. Cool stuff!

Thanks so much for nominating my picture Andrea!!
Thank you for the spotlight Ioana!
Thank you for the spotlight Mark!
Thank you so much to the JPG staff for spotlighting my image and selecting it for image of the week!! I am so excited!

Cool for sure!! This should be on that "priceless" Mastercard commercial! We could really use my namesake....we've already brought out the big guns and still he/she eludes us! GRRRR

You can get some incredible portraits using flash outdoors by adjusting your aperture Nancy. The flash itself takes care of your subject while the aperture takes care of your background. Stopping down will make those skies pop! (The bigger numbers)
