I took my first photography class in the spring of 2006. I brought along my Minolta film camera because I wanted to try my hand at film photography. I soon found out that I didn’t like waiting for the film to be developed, wasn’t happy with the photos once they got developed, had no intention of creating my own dark room, and found film to be an expense I could do without. This photo is one from our black & white film assignment.

John, I followed your advice 3 years ago and retired my Minolta, which I bought in '71. The highly vocal critics of digital photography (especially at flickr) cling to their "elitism."

I wouldn't call them elitists...For me you either want to work in your own dark room or you don't...I don't...Wal-Mart is my dark room...

I want my own darkroom! I think it's fantastically romantic, the idea of watching images emerge out of the vat of unknowing! Sadly, I'm a technical idiot and would likely blow up at least my neighborhood...possibly the city or state! I still want to try it though. Sorry, caught up in the dialogue...it's a beautiful image, John.

It's a beautiful b&w shot! I know film doesn't have the immediacy of digital, but it has soooo many amazing qualities. And you don't need your own darkroom. You can have the negs scanned once they are processed so that you can do the rest of the processing in Photoshop or Lightroom if you like. Try it more often! This is wonderful!
