[Multnomah Falls, on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, east of Troutdale on U.S. Hwy. #30, the “Historic Columbia River Highway,” July, 2014]

During the recent Knight Family Reunion in Beavercreek, Oregon, we took a day off to drive the famous Historic Columbia River Highway (please see previous upload) and visit Multnomah Falls, which is Oregon’s tallest waterfall and, according to the literature, Oregon’s #1 tourist attraction. It isn’t hard to see why although, in my opinion, Oregon’s Crater Lake is far more majestic and geologically significant. Still, Multnomah Falls is spectacular.

Water gushes from the springs under Larch Mountain and plunges over the Upper Falls, dropping 542 feet. The water collects in the cascade pool, descends another nine feet, and then plunges over the Lower Falls, dropping 69 feet, a total drop of 620 feet.

Multnomah Falls may be viewed from a lower platform, from the 45-foot long Benson Footbridge, which was built by Italian masons in 1914 (shown), and from a platform near the top. The bridge is an easy hike and handicap accessible. As you stand on the Bridge, the spray from the upper falls is a welcome relief on a hot day.

From the Bridge, the view is idyllic. It is easy to see why so many weddings are held here. However, on Labor Day, in 1995, a 400-ton boulder fell 225 feet from the face of the upper falls into the cascade pool above the Bridge. It created a 70-foot splash of water that, together with muck and gravel, slammed into a 20-member wedding party that was on the Bridge taking pictures. There were a few injuries. More recently, on January 9 of this year, a falling rock damaged the Bridge and its railing. The Bridge was closed for extensive repairs. Happily, the Bridge had opened by the time Linda and I got there.

There have been many photos of Multnomah Falls posted to JPG, but I thought the members wouldn’t mind another shot, and I think that this is the first upload that tells the story.

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Stood there, saw that!! Kalli and I made a 'girl's trip' to Portland and stopped at the Falls on our way back home. It truly is an amazing sight! I'm glad we missed the Labor Day boulder---our wedding invitation must have been misplaced, thank goodness!! As always, beautifully captured, and artfully written!!

Great shot and info, Dick. Have been there, but not on the bridge. Even back then, my knees were the deterrent. And, yes, I agree with you that Crater Lake is Oregon's tops. Think I have a shot of that. I'll check.
