I was up on retreat last October, and had an opportunity to wander down by the lake. An amazing, out-of-the-way place up in Hawthorne, FL. I noticed on the drive into the camp that there were a handful of families living off the main road, and many off them lived right on the lake. The ramp reminded me of when I was younger, and growing up near a lake similar to this-where we used to swim often. I actually lived right next to a pond, and spend so much time boating and observing (sometimes catching) wild creatures. My friends and I spent so much time in and around water. In northwest NJ we had 7 lakes, several ponds and swamps, and the Rockaway River in which to choose. I had really taken for granted all that was available to us as it pertained to natural surroundings. (Forests, caves, farms, and of course water.) I go on retreats to get some of that serenity back, and having water available is a big plus. It becomes more of a place of healing.

Our swimming hole was called Big Flat. When I think back it was quite magical. You rode a bike as far as you could on a dirt road, hoofed the rest of the way through the woods, parted the branches on the trees and there it was. Storybook . I would love to go back someday and see if there is any magic left. Would be nice to get a dose.

    Neat photo and narrative. Enjoyed!

A beautiful image.. full of serenity, and a wonderful narrative. My backyard pond is my retreat and I spend many hours meandering around it with my Dixie girl. It is indeed a place of healing.. Thanks for sharing this!

Peaceful image and great narrative to go with it ..... I grew up on 160 acres with a river running through it...that river was my refuge... it's true that water is healing... Very cool capture, James....

Wonderful shot and excellent narrative. Water is a great healing device. Not a lot of lakes out here, but rivers and streams are available everywhere. Time spent along or in them have been some of the happiest moments in my life, still are for that matter.

You're absolutely right about the healing power of water.
I've spent many peaceful, content and serene evenings enjoying our pond.
I recently learned that per acre N.J. has more wilderness and forested areas than any other state in American......Amazing !!!

I spent a lot of time in/on the water as a child, including several years on a brackish-water river estuary. I used to pole around on an old raft pretending I was Huckleberry Finn. Thanks for the memories!

Really restful image James, I love being by water but never learned to swim, so missed out a little as regards water adventures. Still got into plenty of scrapes on dry land so maybe best I keep clear of water.

Ponds are such fun when you are kids, we had one near us that had a floating platform that we would swim to and jump off the platform. Those were the days, no worries about anything, just being a kids. This photo made me look twice, it looks so much like a lake in a state park that is fairly close to where we live, although you would not dare to jump in, there are plenty of alligators in that water !!!
