Learning not required; however, it still finds a way of happening.
Besides the library, these were often the only things we had to read as kids that peeked our interest-without cramming a lesson down our throats. The funny thing is that I probably learned more from these guys than from any other source--except for TV. They also became my sole source for learning how to draw-further fueling my passion for the fine and performing arts.
As a teacher I believe that 'any' reading leads to higher learning, and comic books, newspaper comics, and cartoons (including The Simpsons) very often became part of my curriculum development and supplemental instruction. Across the board it worked, and I had fun doing it--and even learned a few things along the way, while making a 'good' living. And it all began with comic books. Imagine that.

Boy, some of those go back a way! Yes, I remember reading lots of comics; they usually cost a dime apiece if I remember right. We're talking back in the 50s.

I too learned a great deal from comic books as a kid, helped my reading skills, nourished my imagination and kept me (somewhat) out of trouble. TV came a bit late for us, I was 13 when it came to our location.

I don't see Superman #1, but then again, you may have it locked down in your bank vault. Great story, JamesH. Having been born in '48, I cut my teeth on these "classics."

Remembering how I loved Archie and Verrrrronica et al :) I totally agree, as a person who will read almost anything.. that comic books served a good purpose.. and these are worth their weight in gold now, now doubt. Super comp and capture!!

Many early comics were quite literate. I was fortunate to be old enough to remember the first Superman and Batman issues with their many references to mythology. They got me interested in reading.

Evokes nice memories, similar to yours. From DC, I liked Flash the best, probably because I was fat and slow as a kid. More into Marvel later.

Well Said, We don't have a lot of comic books that is read, but I am overwhelmed with books! However, while we were clearing out closets and attics for our yard sale this past summer, we did run accross a box of old ones, the hubby first said put them in the yard sale. I did a little research and opted NOT -- although I don't know exactly what is in the box yet, the ones I did look up were worth more than what we could get at a yard sale.
