[On County Road 1/11, Near Radium, Grand County, Colorado; August 2014]

After leaving Granby, Colorado, I continued west on U.S. Hwy. 40 to Kremmling, Colorado. The Colorado River was fairly non-descript to this point, but when I reached Kremmling, the canoes and kayaks began to appear.

At Kremmling, I decided to continue paralleling the River, although this meant driving through the “hills” on a dirt road for about 30 miles.

At times, I was hundreds of feet above the River. At other times, I was next to the River.

The rolling hills were peaceful and bucolic. As I crested a hill, I was drawn to the scene before me (shown). Colorado is mountainous, but much of the Centennial State looks just like this. It is a land of valleys and meadows. There is not the slightest hint, here, that hundreds of miles downstream these valleys and meadows will give way to the Grand Canyon.

At the bottom of the hill, I saw a turnoff to Radium, and I had to have a look. I turned right just beyond the cattle in the pasture.

Radium is a tiny burg that sits on the banks of the Colorado River several miles below the Gore Canyon. It has a population of about 15. There are three or four framed structures, and that’s it. However, Radium has a lively tourist trade (fishing mostly), and a bridge across the River. Also, the Union Pacific R. R. emerges from the Canyon and runs along the River. (Please see inset. The view is upstream, that is, to the east.)

I pushed on to State Bridge, Colorado, and returned to paved roads and civilization (Beavercreek).

Colorado is vast. It is the Nation’s 8th largest state. After visiting Denver, Aspen, and Vail, there is the rest of the state. It would take years to see it all.

As always, thanks for stopping by.

You know how your Mum always kissed you goodnight, when you were a kid and tucked you up in bed with those echoing words .....'Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bugs bite!' Well you didn't listen, did you? And the bugs bit. Hope you're mended Sir Knight.
