Colombian Sketch
(Santa Marta, Colombia)

I took this picture in Plaza de la Catedral. The man walking next to the white-washed wall of the Cathedral wears a traditional Colombian hat called ‘sombrero vueltiao’. This is the Colombian name for ‘sombrero volteado’ or ‘turned hat’, regional world from the northern Caribbean Region that originates in the word for "turn" or "lap". The quality of this hat - created amongst the Zenú tribes of Colombia- is determined by the number of pairs of fibers braided together to make the hat, and its bending flexibility. The more flexible the hat is the higher quality it is. Santa Marta is the second most important colonial city on Colombia’s coast and South America’s oldest surviving city.
