In due season we shall reap; if we faint not...Galatians 6: 9

I am on cloud nine today..You can't believe how thrilled I am! that the Pileated woodpecker came to the suet block on our feeder They are a very nervous bird. I learned that this is a female Pileated Woodpecker because she is lacking the red colored markings by the side of her beak that the male bird has. She instead has black markings by her beak that curves downward.

I wanted to shoot this with the camera on the tripod but did not want to scare her with the movement of attaching my camera to it....so held my breath, walked softly and slowly to the window and hand held my camera...She is very impressive close up and a magnificent large bird. I shot this picture 6 feet away from her with my telephoto lens on the 180mm range.

Because of the frigid weather we are having and predicted for all this week I think hunger and cold fueled the energy for her to come this close to the house to eat on the Suet Block! She did make a brief stop one day last week but did not get my camera out in time before she flew away. Two wishes for the New year was that she would return and that I would be lucky to get a decent shot of her.

Thank you so much JanElle (Heather) for the kindness of the spotlight.. I really appreciate it !!!

Thank you so much Ann Reece for the nomination on 1-5-2015 Very kind and appreciated.

This is indeed a lucky chance for you, Andrea, though the suet I'm sure helped. I used to see these magnificent birds when I was a kid, but not for about 60 years now.

You did get two wishes fulfilled : ). This is an outstanding capture of the bird!!! We have some woodpeckers around here, however I have never see a Pileated Woodpecker around here, but where Lori lives I have seen them up there, high up in the trees.
