[Rancho Del Rio, County Road 1/11 (the “Trough Road”), Eagle County, near State Bridge, Colorado; August 2014]

Continued from the previous post –

I continued down the dirt road that parallels the Colorado River from Kremmling to State Bridge. At times, I had to remind myself that this meandering stream carved the Grand Canyon hundreds of miles downriver.

During the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial, I drove the L&C Trail from St. Louis to Astoria, Oregon. That meant driving the length of the Missouri River, all the way to its source near Three Forks, Montana. Along the way, I was impressed by the number of people living on the riverbank.

So, I was not all that surprised when I crested a hill and saw the sign to “Rancho Del Rio,” a hodgepodge of activity down below. There, on the riverbank, was a familiar assortment of small businesses (mostly rafting, kayaking, fishing, camping, and cooking), and the usual assortment of people (guides, tourists, bikers, drifters, and RVers), some of them living in tipis (look closely).

I looked again at the sign and wondered if there was room to add “pot.” After all, this was Colorado.

I never tire of Colorado.

As always, thanks for stopping by.

P.S. I never tire of Alberta, Canada, either! Thank you, Heather, for the spotlight!

Interesting how people gather at one spot and start a settlement. Nice photo of the place.

Well, at least they aren't starving if they have a grocery store and food to eat... they can appreciate the view besides of the mountain and streams amd not constricted by tall buildings and pollution of the cities....Maybe this is paradise to the people that live in this settlement....Interesting narrative and photo..

LOL ! Your narrative has me laughing ! I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there is pot in that little put together village somewhere.... After all, it is Colorado and legal there ....

ha! this is an awesome scene, Richard. super POV. i'd really like to spend a night or two in one of those tipis. thanks for the dedication! in my case it's not "left a good job in the city", it's more like "left a job AT the city. notice the word "good" is omitted.

Wonderful narrative as always and so personal! I just think of all the abuse that the state of Colorado has taken over the years and it is still intensely beautiful - all over.
