Built in 1848 , this is the southernmost lighthouse in Africa. It overlooks Cape Aguhlas -- also known as the Cape of Needles. Aguhlas is the southernmost point in Africa and the division between the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

The lighthouse is named for the wreck of the Arniston, an East Indiaman that ran aground in 1815 when she turned north in unfavorable winds mistaking Cape Aguhlas for Cape Point. 6 men of 378 passengers and crew survived. The tragedy could have been averted had the East India Company invested in a Harrison chronometer or even a cheap knock-off to keep longitude at sea.
