I appreciated that he turned his head on this shot so that you can see the red patch on the back of it which is how you can identify the male from the female who does not have
the red spot on her head. Woodpeckers love suet and I make sure to have a supply
on hand.

The Hairy woodpecker looks a lot like the Downy in color and pattern except they are much bigger with a longer beak.
