"As the apple tree among the trees of wood, so is my beloved...I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. Solomon 2: 3-4"

I shot this tender moment in our back yard through a small portion of window pane above a screen. The Northern male cardinal was offering a sunflower seed kernel to his mate. The screen was necessary to install because the female had been obsessively attacking her own reflection in the glass imagining it to be a predator to their nest. She can't see her reflection anymore through the screen but only the love reflected from her mate's eyes which are the windows to the soul.

No reflection of hate
Was there e'er to see
Through eyes of her mate
In the crab apple tree.
Who brought a seed kernel
Pledging His love eternal

A wonderful testimony to the sensitive and loving nature of our bird friends. A very striking and beautiful image! Love the poem and verse, too..

so well balanced and elongated like an El Greco. Reds like a Titian. Deeply beautiful

Thank you all for your comments, greatly appreciated ...I was just lucky to capture this scene when standing in the right place at the right time to see this interaction between the two cardinals and capture it through the small window space over the screen. If I had been further away from the window I wouldn't have seen it. This happened within a split second The female cardinal was by herself to begin with on the branch and had my camera aimed to shoot a picture of her singing and then her mate appeared for me to get this shot. Thank you James for comparing it to El Greco...That truly is a compliment!
