I think the male downy was a young one trying to make himself look bigger and fierce by raising the crest on his head to impress the female cardinal while she being older and more worldly wise gave him a patronizing look:) Maybe I have been feeding birds for so long I am beginning to read their minds:) What he really wanted was to eat suet and he wanted her to move out of his way!
