Fushimi Inari is the most important of several thousands of shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice.

It is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, located at the very back of the shrine's main grounds. The entrance to the toril gate covered hiking trail begin with two dense, parallel rows of gates called Senbon Torii ("thousands of torii gates"). The trails lead into the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari.

The torii gates along the entire trail were made possible through donations by thousands of individuals and companies. The custom to donate a torii started to spread since the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to get a wish to become true or to thank for a wish that became true. Along the main path there are around 10,000 torii gates.

The highlight of the shrine is the rows of torii gates, known as Senbon torii. The custom to donate a torii started to spread with donors intentions to get a wish to become true or to thank for a wish that became true.
