Scala Santa, Chapel of Sancta Sanctorum and Triclinium of old Lateran Palace

It houses two surviving parts of the old Lateran Palace. One is the pope’s private chapel (Sancta Sanctorum) and the other is the Holy Staircase. The 28 steps was identified to be part of the staircase of Pilate's house from which Christ descended after his condemnation, so it was given the name of "Scala Santa" ("Holy Staircase"). It was brought from Jerusalem by St. Helena in approximately 325 A.D.

There are 2 other staircases to the left of Santa Scala, which are lined with excellent frescos.
