San Giovanni in Laterano is one of the four Major Basilicas of Rome, together with St. Peter's, Saint Paul Outside the Walls and Santa Maria Maggiore.

It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, of which the Pope is the reigning bishop. As a result, it is considered the "Mother of All Churches" (Omnium ecclesiarum mater), and it has first place in honor of all churches ever built.

Built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano was the first church to be built in Rome. It is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.
