It is hard to believe.. but true
How a thistle brings comfort too
For a male goldfinch to fill its need..
After the plant has gone to seed....
When flowers have lost their bloom,
The white hairs fall off the plume!
©Poetry by me AJP

I have never seen an American goldfinch eat seeds out of a dead thistle before today. On my evening walk in our woods I stood a few feet away from him and he was so busy he didn't see me. I also saw a goldfinch in the afternoon eating thistle seeds in the woods but the lighting was better this evening...He looked content and cozy considering he was perched on a prickly thistle.. It was a peaceful moment and I felt blessed that I was there at the right time to capture this scene. He was the only goldfinch at the time that I saw in the woods this evening and I think he was the same one who may have been in the woods earlier this afternoon.

I was fascinated to watch this wild bird who could find a thistle gone to seed so cozy and edible that he spent some time perched there without showing discomfort. I was able to shoot several pictures as he feasted on the seeds.

Best View in Light Box! Thank you

Thank you all for your kind words...Two days later I have not seen the goldfinch return to the
woods since September 10th! It was a magic be able to capture this scene and
several other pictures while just a few feet away.

A magical moment captured! He stands out so beautifully here and who would have thought these thistles were so useful to certain birds. An excellent capture and entry, too!!

Fasinating indeed! I agree with, Lynn. Great study in bird behaviour.
