Contrails (short for condensation trails) are line-shaped clouds sometimes observed behind airplanes flying in the clear cold humid air. They are composed primarily of water, in the form of ice crystals.

Contrails are formed when water vapor condenses and freezes around small particles (aerosols) that exist in the aeroplane exhaust.

All contrails are formed in the same way, but exist for different lengths of time (lifespan). Contrails can be divided into... short-lived, persistent (non-spreading), and persistent spreading.

Depending on the temperature and humidity, they may be visible for only a few seconds or minutes, or may last for hours.
