I was standing approximately 3 feet away from the Downy Woodpecker when I shot this picture outside late this afternoon...Lately I have been attempting to shoot more pictures while outside of the wild birds who come to our feeder rather than to always shoot through the window... Although I realize not all birds will allow that type of close interaction and it is a gradual process to gain their trust. I feel I can get a clearer focus outside of the birds who are used to my presence with more room to concentrate on the shot.

Best View in the white section of Light box! Thank you!

Lizl I looked on-line to see if your area would have Downy woodpeckers and this is what is listed for North Dakota... Lewis’s Woodpecker, Red-headed Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker. Black-backed Woodpecker Northern Flicker, and Pileated Woodpecker..Good luck should you decide to put up a feeder...

An exceptional close up of this little beauty! I find these birds to be especially trusting and they notice that when I'm outside the larger birds tend to back off giving the woodies more time at the feeder. These are one of my top favorite birds.. and I love this photo!

Such a cutie! I need to go to the store and buy some more suet, my Downy Woodpeckers are not happy with me, I'm such a bad bird mom xD
