Most churches use light to amplify religious experience (encounters with the divine). Whether through large clerestory windows that transform the main chamber interiors, colorful stained glass designs that tell a story, or even strategically placed candles for solemnly prayers…, natural light is an integral part of church architecture. The Basilica of La Sagrada Familia is no different.

La Sagrada Familia is the most visited site in Barcelona. It is one of Antonio Gaudí's most famous works that has been under construction since 1882. Though revolutionary architect Antoni Gaudí passed away in 1926, construction continues up to today, largely based on his original and innovative designs.

Gaudí believed that stained-glass windows were essential features of a church. Hence, he gave them the same expressive status as perhaps even religious sculptures. He said, “Sunshine is the best painter.”

The experience inside La Sagrada wholly demonstrates his belief. Depending on the time of year, hour of the day… the mood inside can range from joyful to contemplative. It is an ever-changing symphony of evocative light and color, arousing a spectrum of emotions. Thanks to the captivating stained glass windows just recently added. These windows were created by Joan Vila-Grau, following the guidelines set out by Gaudí. Antonio Gaudí was fully aware that he would never see the finished product of his grand work. For this reason he left several documents about the stained glass windows that would eventually grace the Basilica’s walls. These awe-inspiring art-works (albeit 21st century additions) help complete Gaudí’s vision of a “Church of harmonious light.”

Be completely enthralled with the master craftsmanship combining glass, form, light and color... the essential elements of stained glass.

Construction of Barcelona's iconic (and often controversial) church is expected to be completed by 2026—a century after the death of its architect.

“There is no reason to regret that I cannot finish the church. I will grow old but others will come after me. What must always be conserved is the spirit of the work, but its life has to depend on the generations it is handed down to and with whom it lives and is incarnated.” - Gaudi
