Pacu Jawi or cow race is one of the part of tradition and culture in West Sumatera. In previous time they held Pacu Jawi as an opportunity for the people to gather and meet each other between villagers in the province. The place will moving occasionally and I was lucky enough to watch this during my visit at Payakumbuh. .

The winner will be the one who could stand still on the ratan holder, of course the cow should be passing the finish line.

Payakumbuh Pacu Jawi is only using one cow per person and they race at the same time so you can imagine how hectic it is on the field once they wave the red flag to start. It is one of the must to see if you ever visit West Sumatera in Indonesia. The famous Pacu Jawi mostly held in Batusangkar (2-3 hours away from Payakumbuh) where they use 2 cow per person to race.
